Third Order

                    The Third Order Secular

Many Christians would like to have a holier life but they do not want to take on the full rule of a religious order.  This is the purpose of the tertiary rule.  In the Dominican Order, the Third Order dates to the 13th century and a tertiary rule was officially given in 1285.

The Dominican Third Order has produced since that time many men and women who lived such lives of holiness that they have been officially named saints or blesseds in the Western Church.  Among them are St. Catherine of Siena, St. Rose of Lima, Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati, Bl. Margaret of Costello and many others.

Members of the Third Order are members of the Order, living with their own rule and participating with the friars, sisters and nuns in the apostolate of the Order.
